Nutrition - Macronutrients

Macronutrients (fat, protein, and carbohydrate) provide energy and are needed in larger quantities.

  1. Carbohydrates are the body's primary energy source in foods like grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes. They can be simple, like glucose and fructose, or complex, like starch and fibre, and provide four calories per gram.
  2. Proteins consist of amino acids and are crucial for building and supporting tissues and producing hormones, enzymes, and other vital molecules. They contain 4 calories per gram and are present in foods like meat, fish, eggs, dairy, legumes, and nuts. Protein is vital for the body, but not all sources are the same, and you may not need as much as you think! Protein is found in muscle, bone, skin, hair, and our immune system. In addition, it’s used for chemical reactions and carries oxygen in the blood. There are over 10,000 different proteins that make up the body and keep you healthy.
  3. Fats are an essential part of a healthy diet. In addition to providing energy, they also play a crucial role in absorbing vitamins and minerals. They also help to protect essential organs, such as the heart and liver, from damage.
