The Recovery Score is calculated by using data from the Sleep Score and the Readiness Score.
The Recovery Zone is based on the following Data.
The Recovery Zone uses sleep data from the past week to calculate a "sleep reservoir". Shorter sleep decreases the reservoir, while longer sleep increases it. Remember that your sleep debt also depends on your HRV and activity level.
Although you cannot "bank" sleep in advance, maintaining a baseline of good sleep with adequate length can make it easier for your body to compensate for a night with a shorter sleep duration.
